Lutherhaus in Eisenach

Immerse yourself in “Luther and the Bible”

The Lutherhaus is probably one of the most attractive and oldest half-timbered buildings and is located in direct proximity to the market square and St. George’s Church in Eisenach. Martin Luther lived with the Cotta family in this historic half-timbered house during his three years at the local grammar school.

The Lutherhaus has been a museum since the mid-1950s and invites you to the multiple award-winning permanent multimedia exhibition “Luther and the Bible”. Some visitors only spend an hour here, whilst others even stay all day. The house is a modern treasure chamber with high-quality exhibits that you can discover in your own way and completely independently. Here, you can enter the famous “Luther chambers” from 1356, find out more about Luther’s Bible translation that made world history, and view unique medieval art treasures, such as works by Lucas Cranach and the record of Johann Sebastian Bach’s baptism.

The Lutherhaus museum in Eisenach is an outstanding testimony to the contemporary remembrance of the Reformation and, at the same time, an artistic appraisal of Martin Luther that is unique in the world. Lessons as in Luther’s day, book printing, calligraphy: in “Luther’s workshop”, a broad educational programme is offered for groups of children, young people and adults.

The special exhibition “Study and Eradication: The Church’s ‘Dejudaization Institute’, 1939–1945” examines a dark and little known chapter of the history of the church and its repercussions up to the present day in a well-grounded, critical way and using multimedia.

The sculpture “man in a cube” by the renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei can be seen in the courtyard of the Lutherhaus.

For all hiking enthusiasts: the Luther Trail runs right past the Lutherhaus and connects Eisenach’s historic town city to the legendary Wartburg. After a more successful hike, you will even receive a certificate here.
